3 metres if it is a gift for home use or for wide distribution at a trade show, because it is small and light. 5 metres if it will be used by building or renovation professionals, as that is the format most commonly used for everyday work.

It is the width of the tape. A wider tape is stiffer, so it can extend further unsupported without bending, which is something professionals value when measuring on their own.

A brake that keeps the tape fixed at the measurement where you release it, instead of retracting on its own. To retract it, you press a button. It lets you measure with one hand and take notes with the other.

On the round side of the casing, which is what you see when it is worn on a belt or placed on a desk. The usual choice is a full-colour resin dome with a raised finish, or pad printing if the logo has one or two colours.

A laser measure is a higher-end gift for architects, surveyors or estate agents measuring whole rooms. A tape measure is more universal and costs less, so it is a better fit for wider distribution.

It is better to hand it directly to professionals rather than leave it on an open counter, because it is a cutting tool and there may be children at a trade show. Also bear in mind that rules on cutting tools vary from country to country.
